Kolkatta is the capital of West Bengal and is located on the Eastern Coast of India. Kolkatta was formerly known as Calcutta and was once a capital of India long before Delhi was given that honour. The Regional passport office at Kolkatta was started in 1955 along with four other passport offices which were set up in the country. The passport office in Kolkatta is responsible for issuing passports to all the citizens of Kolkatta as well as twenty other districts of West Bengal namely Howrah, Nadia, Hooghly, Burdwan, 24-paragana (N), 24-paragana (S), Birbhum, Bankura, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purulia, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Coochbihar, Dinajpur (N), Dinajpur (S). It also caters to citizens of some districts of  Sikkim, Tripura, Medinipur (E), Medinipur (W).

The passport office in Kolkatta is open on all days from Monday to Friday and closed on the weekends on Saturday and Sunday. The passport office also remains closed on public and Government holidays every year. The Regional passport office timings are 10 am to 5.30 pm everyday though the submission of application forms is from 10 am to 1.30 pm.
