Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and is located at a very strategic position in the South. Chennai was earlier the princely state of Tamil Nadu. The Regional passport office located in Chennai was formed in the year 1955 with four other passport offices across the length and breadth of the country. It was built at George Town. But in the year 2006, the venue was shifted to its new address in the year 1966 which is Shastri Bhavan located at 26, Haddows Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai – 600 006.
The districts that fall under the jurisdiction of the Regional passport office at Chennai are CHENNAI CITY, COIMBATORE, CUDDALORE, DHARMAPURI, ERODE, KANCHEEPURAM , KARAIKKAL, KRISHNAGIRI , NAMAKKAL , NILGIRIS , PONDICHERRY, SALEM , THIRUVALLUR , THIRUVANNAMALAI , VILLUPURAM and VELLORE. Hence the passport office is responsible or issuing the passport to everyone who has an address in any of the above mentioned districts.
The passport office in Chennai is open on all days from Monday to Friday and closed on the weekends on Saturday and Sunday. The passport office also remains closed on public and Government holidays every year. The Regional passport office timings are 10 am to 5.30 pm everyday though the submission of application forms is from 10 am to 3.30 pm with a break from 1 to 2 pm everyday.
